Palm Free Cold Process Soap

This elegant, handmade soap is made with a Cold Process recipe that is free of Palm Oil. The rich color is achieved by allowing the Chocolate and Vanilla fragrances to discolor the soap naturally. Finally, we used a subtle river of Sparkle Gold mica to emphasize the pretty swirls.

SAFETY FIRST: Goggles, gloves, and long sleeves should be on at all times while prepping for and making soap. Ensure that kids, pets, and other distractions/tripping hazards don’t have access to your soap making space, and be sure that whatever space you are making soap in is well-ventilated.

COLOR PREP: Disperse the Titanium Dioxide in Sweet Almond Oil at a rate of 1 teaspoon colorant to 1 tablespoon oil. Use a mini-mixer to make quick work of the mixing and to eliminate any clumps, but be sure to saturate the powders in the oil before you turn on the mini-mixer or you’ll get a messy poof of pigment!

ONE: Slowly and carefully add the lye to the water and stir until clear. Set aside to cool.

TWO: Melt and combine the Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Rice Bran Oil, and Sunflower Seed Oil.

THREE: When both the lye water and the oils have cooled to below 130 degrees, add the Sodium Lactate to the cooled lye water and mix well. Slowly and carefully pour the lye water into the oils and stick blend until a light trace.

FOUR: Split the batch in half. Add all of the dispersed Titanium Dioxide to one of the split batches and stick blend until incorporated. To this same batch, add 2 ounces of Vanilla Select Fragrance Oil. Switch to a whisk if trace is getting much thicker than medium.

FIVE: To the other batch, add 2 ounces of Dark Rich Chocolate Fragrance Oil and 1 teaspoon Sparkle Gold Mica, then stick blend until the trace matches the consistency of the other batch.

SIX: Pour a thin layer of the chocolate scented batch into the mold. Follow this with a thin layer of the vanilla scented batch, poured down the middle of the mold and from a high vantage point to encourage break-through. Repeat, alternating batches of soap until there is about an ounce left of each batch.

SEVEN: With the little bit of soap you have left from each batch you’ll create a layer for swirling! Pouring slowly and with the spout of your container close to the top of the soap, create a thin “s-curve” line down the length of the mold with the vanilla scented soap. Repeat with the rest of the chocolate scented soap.

EIGHT: To create the swirl, use a chopstick or dowel placed into the top 1/4” of the soap to drag perpendicularly through the top of the soap, mimicking the s-curves but this time going down the short side of the mold. Once you reach the end of the mold, go back through and follow the length of the mold with a “loop de loop” back and forth across the mold.

NINE: Spray the top of the soap with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, cover and insulate for 1-2 days. Unmold, cut and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks. Enjoy!

Vanilla Discoloration

As this soap cures the swirls will discolor to a rich brown. Using the natural discoloration of fragrance oil instead of fighting it can give you beautiful results. Learn more about the discoloration that can result from fragrance oils on Soap Queen TV.
