My name is Beth Roy and I am a Vocational Supervisor at the Carlonia Living and Learning Center (CLLC) in Pittsboro, NC. The CLLC is a residential and vocational facility that serves adults with autism. We currently have 15 residents and two day students. The CLLC is located on 79 acres of land and we have four vegetable gardens, an herb garden, and several flower gardens that our residents work alongside of our staff members to maintain.
Almost four years ago, we were looking for an idea for Christmas gifts for the parents of our residents. One of our staff members suggested that we dry our herbs and use them to make glycerin soap. After giving them as gifts to the parents, we got so many compliments that we decided to make soap-making a regular part of our vocational program. Thus, our soap-making curriculum was born! We have been using supplies from Bramble Berry ever since, and the soaps our residents make are a hit! We love making glycerin soap because there are so many different ways that our residents can be involved. They can cut the glycerin, melt it, stir it, add color, pour it, wrap it... With so many different skill levels here at the CLLC, it is great to be able to have almost all of our residents involved in the process one way or another.
We continue to dry our own herbs to put into the soap. Our soap is sold to staff members, friends and family, and taken to local conferences. We really enjoy using BrambleBerry soap supplies. Thanks for all of the great ideas!
