Evergreen Mountain Soap Project

Project Description
This project is inspired by the beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. It's scented with Evergreen Forest Fragrance Oil, which gives the bars a fresh and green scent. While this landscape design looks difficult, it's easier than you may think. The layers are very forgiving because they don't need to be perfect.
The soap is made with Gentle Quick Mix, which is a palm-free recipe. Because there's no palm oil in this recipe, there's plenty of time to work with the soap. To help speed up trace, we used a 10% water discount. We also highly recommend sodium lactate for this recipe to help the soap harden and unmold easier.
You will need:
- 10″ Silicone Loaf Mold
- 38 oz. Gentle Quick Mix
- 5.4 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
- 10.9 oz. Distilled Water (10% water discount)
- 2.5 tsp. Sodium Lactate
- 2 oz. Evergreen Forest Fragrance Oil
- 1 tsp. Green Chrome Oxide Pigment
- 1 tsp. Black Oxide
- 1 tsp. Titanium Dioxide
- 1 tsp. Caribbean Blue Mica
- Super Pearly White Mica
- Powder Duster
FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 2 ounces of Evergreen Forest Fragrance Oil into a small glass container and set aside.
COLORANT PREP: Add 1 tablespoon of a lightweight oil, like sweet almond oil, to 4 separate containers. Then, add 1 teaspoon of Green Chrome Oxide Pigment, titanium dioxide, black oxide, and Caribbean Blue Mica into the separate containers. Use a Mini Mixer to fully incorporate the color into the oil. Have the Super Pearly White Mica and the Powder Duster nearby. Optional: To ensure the titanium dioxide blends smoothly into the soap, we recommend micronizing it before dispersing it in oil. Use a coffee grinder to break up any clumps of color and prevent streaks of white from showing in the final soap. We like to use a coffee grinder that has a removable stainless steel mixing area for easy cleaning.
SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your soaping space. Always soap in a well-ventilated area.
Follow these steps:

Slowly and carefully add 5.4 ounces of lye to 10.9 ounces of water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside and when it's cool, add 2.5 teaspoons of sodium lactate.
NOTE: Because there is no palm oil in the Gentle Quick Mix, sodium lactate is highly recommended for this recipe.

Fully melt the entire bag of Gentle Quick Mix until it’s completely clear. Shake the bag to mix up all the oils. Measure 38 ounces into a large heat-safe container. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 130° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend the mixture to a thin trace.
Add all of the Evergreen Forest Fragrance Oil to the entire batch. Split the soap into 4 containers with the following amounts and add the dispersed colorants to each. Whisk each container thoroughly to mix in the colors.
- Container A (400 mL): 1 tsp. dispersed Green Chrome Oxide Pigment
- Container B (200 mL): 1 tsp. dispersed titanium dioxide + 1/2 tsp. dispersed Green Chrome Oxide Pigment
- Container C (500 mL): 1/2 tsp. dispersed titanium dioxide + 1/2 tsp. dispersed Caribbean Blue Mica
- Container D (400 mL): 1/8 tsp. dispersed black oxide

Stick blend the dark green soap until you reach a medium to thick trace. Plop about half of the dark green soap into the mold and use a spoon to shape it - we created a slope that was concentrated on one side of the mold.

Stick blend the light green soap until you reach a medium to thick trace. Plop all of the light green soap into the mold. Shape the soap with a spoon until you're happy with the effect. Then, place the rest of the dark green soap on top and shape with a spoon.

Stick blend the gray soap until you reach a thick trace. Use a spoon to gently plop all of the gray soap in the middle of the mold. Use a spoon to shape the soap and create the mountain.

Depending on the trace of your light blue soap, pour or plop it on both sides of the gray soap. Once the sides are completely filled in, gently cover the top of the gray soap with blue soap. Gently tap the soap on the counter to help get rid of bubbles.

Place a few teaspoons of Super Pearly White Mica into the Powder Duster and sprinkle it on top of the soap until it's completely covered.

To help promote gel phase, place the mold onto a heating pad set to high. Gently cover with a box, being careful to not disturb the top of the soap. Allow the soap to sit insulated for 1-2 hours - you may want to check on it periodically to make sure it does not overheat and crack.

Leave the soap in the mold for 3-4 days. Remove, cut into bars, and let them cure for 4-6 weeks. Enjoy!
