The collection celebrates honey bees and all that they do for our ecosystem. Many fruits and vegetables require pollination to grow and produce. Bees are responsible for pollinating about 1/3 of the food we eat, including blueberries, almonds, and avocados. They also pollinate clover and alfalfa, which are fed to cattle.
Honey and beeswax are also important resources. Beeswax is used in everything from lip balm to cleaning products. It's safe to say bees are an important part of our day-to-day lives.
In 2006, beekeepers in the US started reporting that adult worker bees were dying off at higher-than-normal rates. It's known as Colony Collapse Disorder, and scientists aren't entirely sure what's causing it. According to this article from the University of California, it may be due to number of factors like pesticides, parasites, intensive farming, or urbanization.
The UC Davis Honey and Pollination Center is working to expand research about all things honey, including the health of bees. They do so mostly through education. The center hosts events like honey tastings, mead courses, and the annual Bee Symposium, which is an all-day learning event for beekeepers.
In addition, they partner with organizations like the Department of Entomology and Nematology and the California Master Beekeeper Program.
