5 Ways to Make DIY Bath Bombs Special

Making your own bath bombs is fun, and part of that fun is getting to customize your bath bombs any way you want. Aside from your basic bath bomb recipe of citric acid, baking powder, oil, and witch hazel, there’s a lot that you can add to bath bombs to make them extra fun and very special.

Glitter in bath bombs

If you know a kid or just someone who’s a kid at heart, adding some sparkle to your bath can be a real treat. We offer EcoGlitter in 7 different colors to match your project perfectly. In bath bombs, this glitter is released into the bath water as the bomb fizzes and dissolves. The glitter is made from cellulose and is biodegradable, so you don’t have to worry about it running down the drain.

Just add the EcoGlitter into your dry ingredients, along with powdered colorants, and mix it through.

Botanicals in bath bombs

There’s something luxurious about bathing in flowers. You can bring that experience to your DIY bath bomb project by adding dried flowers to your bath bomb.

We offer a range of flowers and botanicals to use in your bath bombs. Too many flowers in a bath bomb can prevent them from sticking together and cause them to crumble, but you can place dried flowers or flower petals in the bottom of the mold before pressing your bath bomb mix in firmly.

When the bath bomb is dropped into bath water, it’ll fizz and release those flowers into the bath water, giving a beautiful bathing experience. Imagine giving a rose petal bath bomb as a Valentine’s Day gift!

Toys in bath bombs

For kids, it’s fun to find things in unexpected places. You can put a small toy inside a child’s bath bomb for them to discover and play with!

You can find tiny toys like fish and other animals in craft shops at affordable prices. Make sure the toys are small enough to fit in your bath bomb mold without touching the sides. To add them to a bath bomb, fill up your mold half way, rest the toy on top, and then pack your bath bomb mix into the mold until it’s full.

Once your bath bomb is fully dry and ready to use, it’s playtime! Make sure the toys you use are age appropriate for your children, and supervise young kids during bath time to make sure they’re not injured by the toy.

Extracts and oils in bath bombs

Specialty extracts and oils can add special qualities to bath bombs. Some extracts may help soothe and moisturize your skin. Others may work great for sensitive or dry skin. Botanical extracts and oils are not essential oils, and they usually don’t have a scent, so they can be paired with other fragrances.

For example, calendula extract has anti-inflammatory properties, and it may help soothe eczema and rashes. Vitamin E oil not only adds moisturizing properties, but it also helps extend the shelf life of your bath and body products.
Just add your extract or oil to the oil phase of your bath bomb and mix it in to your dry ingredients as normal. We have a range of botanical extracts available, and you'll definitely find the perfect one for your project.

Bubbles for bath bombs

Bath bombs fizz, but have you ever wanted those bubbles to last a little longer? You can formulate a bath bomb to add bubbles to your bath!

Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, or SLSA, is a compound derived from coconut and palm oil, and it’s a surfactant so it creates bubbles in a way similar to soap. It’s a white powder, so you add it to the dry phase of your bath bomb mixture. Remember to add and mix the SLSA very carefully, because airborne powder can cause irritation.

When your bath bomb is added to bath water, it will fizz and create little bubbles for a luxurious bathing experience.
