Moon Child Soap Cupcakes Project

Project Description
These Moon Child Soap Cupcakes are full of sparkle! They also smell amazing thanks to Moon Child Fragrance Oil. Mini moon and star embeds give the cupcakes a celestial theme. The frosting is created from the same batch of soap as the base. It involves less prep, but you need a good understanding of trace to find the right texture to pipe.
We were inspired to create these soap cupcakes after watching Safiya Nygaard put her own spin on our Champagne Soap Cupcakes - watch her video here. We decided to keep the inspiration going with our own take on Safiya's cupcakes, which feature moons, stars, and bats.
You will need:

- Mini Moon Silicone Column Mold
- Mini Star Silicone Column Mold
- 5 oz. LCP Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base
- Gold Sparkle Mica
- Queen's Purple Mica
- Base
- 6 Cavity Silicone Circle Mold
- 38 oz. Basic Quick Mix
- 5.4 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
- 2 tsp. Sodium Lactate
- 10.9 oz. Distilled Water (10% water discount)
- 1 oz. Moon Child Fragrance Oil
- Queen's Purple Mica
- Frosting
- Frosting Bag & Frosting Tip
- 1 oz. Moon Child Fragrance Oil
- Titanium Dioxide
- Queen's Purple Mica
- Snowflake Sparkle Mica
- Silver Rainbow EcoGlitter
MAKE THE EMBEDS: Chop and melt 5 ounces of LCP Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base in the microwave using 10 second bursts. Split equally into 2 containers. To one container, add 1/8 teaspoon of Queen's Purple Mica. To the other, add 1/8 teaspoon of Gold Sparkle Mica. Stir until there are no clumps. Pour the purple soap into the Mini Moon Silicone Column Mold, and the gold soap into the Mini Star Silicone Column Mold. Place the embeds in a tall vase or prop them against a wall to stand upright. Allow to cool completely for about 1-2 hours. Remove from the molds and cut into small moon and star pieces. Set aside.
COLOR PREP: Disperse 2 teaspoons of Queen's Purple Mica into 2 tablespoons of lightweight liquid oil (like sunflower oil or sweet almond). Disperse 1 teaspoon of titanium dioxide into 1 tablespoon of liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to work out any clumps.
FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 2 ounces of Moon Child Fragrance Oil into a glass fragrance oil-safe container. Set aside.
FROSTING BAG PREP: Insert the frosting tip of your choice into a frosting bag. For this project, we used a Wilton 6B tip.
SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.
Follow these steps:

Slowly and carefully add 5.4 ounces of lye to 10.9 ounces of water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 2 teaspoons of sodium lactate to help the bars harden more quickly.

Fully melt the entire bag of Basic Quick Mix until it’s completely clear and there is no cloudiness. Shake the bag to mix up all the oils. Measure 38 ounces into a large heat-safe container. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 100-120° F (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend the mixture to a thin trace.

Split off 21 ounces of the soap into a separate container. To that container, add 1 tablespoon of dispersed Queen's Purple Mica and half of the Moon Child Fragrance Oil (it's okay to eyeball it). Whisk to combine. If you still have a thin trace, use the stick blender to thicken to a medium trace.

Pour the purple soap into the cavities of the Circle Silicone Mold. Tap on the counter to get rid of bubbles and even out the top. Note: This project was originally made with Cupcake Silicone Mold, which was discontinued. The Circle Silicone Mold creates a similar shape but will look different from the photos.

To the remaining soap, add the rest of the Moon Child Fragrance Oil, 1/2 teaspoon of Queen's Purple Mica, and 1 teaspoon of titanium dioxide. Mix thoroughly with a whisk. If the soap is a thin to medium trace, continue stick blending until it's a thick trace. It needs to be thin enough to pipe but firm enough to hold its shape. The consistency should be similar to thick pudding. Let the soap sit in the bowl for about 1 minute and test it. If necessary, wait a few more minutes until it's the correct consistency.

Spoon some of the soap into the frosting bag and twist to close. Squeeze a large dollop in the center of each cupcake.

Pipe the frosting up and around the center of each dollop until you form a peak. Frost slowly and carefully, and add more frosting to the bag when necessary. If you have leftover soap, pipe little flowers on freezer paper to use as toppers for another batch.

Dust each cupcake with a layer of Snowflake Sparkle Mica, then sprinkle on Silver Rainbow EcoGlitter. Place a moon embed on top of each cupcake, and star embeds all around.

If you live in a hot climate, place the soap cupcakes in the fridge for 24 hours. Allow them to stay in the mold for about 2 days. Unmold and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks. Enjoy!
