Project Description

This rich and creamy moisturizer is great for dry skin. It contains skin-loving ingredients like cocoa butter, avocado butter, and squalane oil.

This recipe creates a thick lotion that absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling soft. The combination of moisturizing butters like avocado and deodorized cocoa thicken the cream, while lightweight oils like sunflower and squalane ensure there's no greasy feeling. It's scented with Fairy Tale Rose Fragrance Oil, which is a sweet yet sophisticated floral with notes of geranium and vanilla. A touch of Rose Pearl Mica creates a soft pink hue.

If you've never made lotion before, it's surprisingly easy! All you have to do is combine water, oils, and additives. Learn more about creating lotion from scratch here. Not ready to jump into lotion making quite yet? Body butter is a great option - learn the difference between lotion and body butter here

You will need:

  • About Eight 4 oz. Hexagon Jars*
  • Water Phase:
  • 20.8 oz. Distilled Water (65%)
  • Oil Phase:
  • 2 oz. Sunflower Oil (6%)
  • 2 oz. Squalane Oil (6%)
  • 2.6 oz. Avocado Butter (8%)
  • 0.6 oz. Deodorized Cocoa Butter (2%)
  • 2.8 oz. Polawax Emulsifying Wax (9%)
  • Cool-Down Phase:
  • 0.4 oz. Fairy Tale Rose Fragrance Oil (1%)
  • 0.4 oz. Rose Extract (1%)
  • 0.4 oz. Optiphen (1%)
  • 1/4 tsp. Rose Pearl Mica

*Note: This project was originally made with Dark Green 6 oz. Glass Jars, which have been discontinued. They have been substituted with 4 oz. Hexagon Jars.

EQUIPMENT PREP: Disinfect your utensils by dipping them in a 5% bleach water solution and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers, your stick blender, and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your mask. Your products must be as free of germs, bacteria, and microbes as possible.

Follow these steps:

1

In a large heat-safe container, add 20.8 ounces of distilled water. Heat in the microwave until the water is about 170° F.

2

In a separate small heat-safe container, combine 2 ounces of sunflower oil, 2 ounces of squalane oil, 2.6 ounces of avocado butter, 0.6 ounces of cocoa butter, and 2.8 ounces of Polawax Emulsifying Wax. Heat in the microwave on 30-60 second bursts until everything is melted and it's about 180° F.

3

Check the temperature of both containers - they should be about 160° F. When they’re ready, tap your stick blender on the bottom of the bowl to release bubbles. Pour the oils and wax into the water and begin pulsing the stick blender for 60-90 seconds, making sure it's fully emulsified.

4

Continue stick blending until the temperature drops to about 130-140° F. Add 0.4 ounces of Fairy Tale Rose Fragrance Oil, 0.4 ounces of Optiphen, and 0.4 ounces of rose extract. Stick blend for another 60-90 seconds.

5

Add 1/4 teaspoon of Rose Pearl Mica and stick blend for about 30 seconds until fully combined and there are no clumps. If the mica separates a little, just keep stick blending for several minutes until there are no large particles on top (a few small particles is fine).

6

Pour the cream into jars. Allow it to cool for about 1-2 hours with the lid off to prevent condensation. Secure the lid and allow the cream to fully cool and thicken. Enjoy!
