Description

This colorful, cheerful, crowd-pleasing soap is the perfect project for intermediate or advanced soapers. The layers are wavy instead of perfectly straight, which makes every bar unique!

The key to the design is the prep and watching the texture of your soap. Bring it to a very thin trace in the beginning - this gives you time to thicken each layer before spooning it into the mold. To prevent the soap from becoming too thick, we chose our Gentle Quick Mix. It's a palm-free blend of slow-moving oils. The recipe is scented with Apricot Freesia Fragrance Oil, which is a sweet scent that gives you plenty of time to work.

If you live in a cold climate, we recommend placing this batch of soap on a heating pad for a couple hours. That promotes gel phase, which makes the colors really pop. Speaking of color, Kelly Green Mica morphs when it comes in contact with soap. Don't worry, it returns to a beautiful bright green!

Classic Rainbow Cold Process Soap Project
This palm-free recipe is sure to put a smile on your face!

Classic Rainbow Soap Project | Bramble Berry

Ingredients
5 lb. Mold with Sliding Bottom
Silicone Liner for 5 lb. Wood Mold
54 oz. Gentle Quick Mix
7.7 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
17.2 oz. Distilled Water
2.5 tsp. Sodium Lactate
3.5 oz. Apricot Freesia Fragrance Oil
Titanium Dioxide
Red Mica
Sunset Orange Mica
Yellow Mica
Kelly Green Mica
Caribbean Blue Mica
Queen's Purple Mica
Snowflake Sparkle Mica

Instructions

COLORANT PREP: In separate containers, disperse 1 teaspoon of Red Mica, Sunset Orange Mica, Yellow Mica, Kelly Green Mica, Caribbean Blue Mica, and Queen's Purple Mica into 1 tablespoon of sunflower or sweet almond oil (or any other liquid oil). In a separate container, disperse 2 teaspoons of titanium dioxide into 2 tablespoons of a lightweight liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to help get rid of any clumps. Set aside. Have Snowflake Sparkle Mica nearby to dust on the top of the soap.

FRAGRANCE OIL PREP: In a glass container, measure 3.5 ounces of Apricot Freesia Fragrance Oil and set aside.

SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.

1 Slowly and carefully add 7.7 ounces of lye to 17.2 ounces of distilled water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside. When it's cool, add 2.5 teaspoons of sodium lactate. Fully melt the entire bag of Gentle Quick Mix until it's completely clear. Shake the bag to mix up all the oils. Measure 54 ounces into a large heat-safe container. Note: The sodium lactate helps the bars harden more quickly, which is why we recommend it for this soft recipe.
2

Add the following dispersed colorants to 7 containers.

  • Container A (Red) - 2 tsp. Red Mica + 1/4 tsp. Yellow Mica
  • Container B (Orange) - 1 tsp. Sunset Orange Mica
  • Container C (Yellow) - 2 tsp. Yellow Mica
  • Container D (Green) - 2 tsp. Kelly Green Mica
  • Container E (Blue) - 1 tsp. Caribbean Blue Mica
  • Container F (Purple) - 2 tsp. Queen's Purple Mica
  • Container G (White) - 2 Tbsp. titanium dioxide
3

Once the lye water and oils have cooled to about 120° F or below, (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend the mixture to a very thin trace. Add the following amount of soap to the containers and whisk to combine. Add the Apricot Freesia Fragrance Oil proportionally to each container (it's okay to eyeball it) and whisk in completely.

  • Container A (Red) - 400 mL
  • Container B (Orange) - 400 mL
  • Container C (Yellow) - 400 mL
  • Container D (Green) - 400 mL
  • Container E (Blue) - 300 mL
  • Container F (Purple) - 300 mL
  • Container G (White) - 300 mL
4

Stick blend the white soap until you reach a medium trace. Prop up one side of the mold with a few books or other tools (we used a scale) and spoon the white soap into one corner to form the clouds. Sculpt the clouds how you'd like and set mold aside. Note: If the soap is not holding its shape, set the mold aside to give the clouds time to thicken while you work on the other colors.

5

Stick blend the purple soap using short bursts until it reaches medium trace. It should be thin enough to pour, but thick enough to slightly hold its shape. Use a spoon or pour the purple soap into the bottom of the mold to the side of the clouds. Use a spoon to spread the purple soap if necessary.

6

Stick blend the blue soap using short bursts until it reaches medium trace. Use a spoon to plop the soap on top, being careful to not break through the purple layer. The blue soap may not completely cover the clouds - that's okay. Use a spoon to spread the blue soap evenly if necessary.

7

Stick blend the green soap using short bursts until it reaches medium trace. Use a spoon to plop the soap on top of the blue. The green layer will go across the mold completely, covering the clouds. Use a spoon to spread the green soap evenly if necessary.

8

Check the consistency of the yellow soap. If it's still at a thin trace, use the stick blender to thicken to a medium trace. Carefully pour or use a spoon to plop the yellow soap across the green. Use a spoon to spread the yellow soap evenly if necessary.

9

Repeat step 8 for the orange and red soap. Once all the soap has been poured into the mold, tap the soap firmly on the counter to help level it and get rid of bubbles.

10

Use a small spoon to texture the top of the soap how you'd like. Be careful to not disturb the orange layer below. Once you're happy with the top, dust it with Snowflake Sparkle Mica.

11

Place the mold on a heating pad set to medium/high for about 1-2 hours. This promotes gel phase, which makes the colors pop. Keep an eye on the soap to make sure it does not overheat and crack.

12

Allow the soap to harden in the mold for 2-3 days. Because it doesn't have palm oil, it may need a little longer. Slide the bottom of the mold out to release the silicone liner. Gently pull the sides of the silicone liner away and push the soap out. Cut into bars and allow them to cure for 4-6 weeks before use. Enjoy! Note: If you find the soap to be soft or sticky to the touch, give it another day to harden. It should release easily from the mold.
