Ginger and Orange Soap Project

Project Description
This project is made with natural ingredients. It's also palm free - we used our Gentle Quick Mix, which is a mixture of coconut oil, canola oil, olive oil, castor oil, and avocado butter. It makes prep fast and easy. The combination of ginger and Orange 10X Essential Oil smells bright and fresh.
The vibrant colors are created with jagua blue extract and annatto seeds. To extract the color from annatto seeds, they need to be infused with a lightweight liquid oil - we recommend sunflower, canola, avocado, or sweet almond. When added to hot oil, the annatto seeds quickly give it a vibrant orange hue. We recommend letting the annatto infuse in hot oil for at least two hours, up to several days.
You will need:
- 10" Silicone Loaf Mold
- 36 oz. Gentle Quick Mix
- 5.1 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
- 10.3 oz. Distilled Water (10% water discount)
- 2 tsp. Sodium Lactate (optional, but recommended)
- 0.4 oz. Ginger Essential Oil
- 0.5 oz. Orange 10X Essential Oil
- Titanium Dioxide
- Annatto Seed Infusion (0.2 oz. annatto seeds + 3 oz. lightweight oil)
- Jagua Blue Extract
- Cornflower Petals
FRAGRANCE PREP: In separate glass containers, measure 0.4 ounces of ginger essential oil and 0.5 ounces of Orange 10X Essential Oil. Set aside.
COLORANT PREP: Disperse 1 teaspoon of titanium dioxide into 1 tablespoon of sunflower or sweet almond oil (or any other liquid oil). Then, in a separate container, disperse 1/2 teaspoon of jagua blue extract into 1/2 tablespoon of lightweight liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to help get rid of any clumps. Finally, add 3 ounces of lightweight liquid oil and 0.2 ounces of annatto seeds to a heat-safe container. Place the container in the microwave and heat for about 60 seconds, or until the oil is about 120-150° F. Remove from the microwave and allow the seeds to infuse the oil for at least two hours. It should be a bright yellow color. Strain out the seeds and set the oil aside. Optional: To ensure the titanium dioxide blends smoothly into the soap, we recommend micronizing it before dispersing it in oil. Use a coffee grinder to break up any clumps of color and prevent streaks of white from showing in the final soap. We like to use a coffee grinder that has a removable stainless steel mixing area for easy cleaning.
SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.
Follow these steps:

Slowly and carefully add 5.1 ounces of lye to 10.3 ounces of water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 2 teaspoons of sodium lactate to help the bars harden more quickly.

Fully melt the bag of Gentle Quick Mix, shake thoroughly to combine, and measure out 36 ounces into a large mixing bowl. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 120° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend until thin trace.

Split the batch in the following amounts and add the colorants. Whisk to combine.
- Container A (300 mL) - 1 teaspoon dispersed jagua blue extract
- Container B (500 mL) - 1 tablespoon dispersed titanium dioxide
- Rest of soap - 1 tsp. annatto infusion

Add half of the measured ginger essential oil to the blue soap, and half to the white. Add all of the Orange 10X Essential Oil to the orange soap. Mix with a whisk.

Check the consistency of the soap. You want it to be a light/medium trace - it needs to be pourable, but if it's too thin the colors will muddle together. If necessary, pulse each container with the stick blender to thicken.

Pour the white and blue soap into the large container of orange soap. Pour 3-4 times for each color in various spots of the bowl and at varying heights so the soap breaks through the orange. Use a spatula to stir the soap in a figure-eight pattern. Give it one more swirl if you feel the colors are not incorporated enough. The key is to thoroughly swirl but not mix the colors together.

Pour all the soap into the mold. Tap firmly on the counter. To create texture, use a small spoon to push the soap toward the center. If the soap is not holding its shape, wait 2-3 minutes and try again.

Once you're happy with the top, place cornflower petals down the middle of the soap and press lightly with gloved hands to help them stick. Spritz with 99% isopropyl alcohol to help prevent soda ash. We recommend placing this batch on a heating pad set to medium for 1-2 hours to promote gel phase and help unmold faster.

Allow the soap to stay in the mold for 2-3 days. Unmold and cut into bars. Allow the soap to cure for 4-6 weeks and enjoy!
