CBD in DIY Bath Products

By now, you've likely heard of CBD. Just a few years ago it was relatively unknown, but now it's in everything from bath bombs to gummy bears. CBD is especially big here in the Pacific Northwest - you can find it at most grocery stores. Customers have been asking for the best way to use it in DIY bath and body, so we created 2 projects with CBD oil. Learn more below.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (also known as CBD) is a molecule found in cannabis and hemp plants. It's commonly sold as an oil, tincture, in capsules, or as a spray. Ology Essentials offers a full spectrum CBD oil. They produce this oil from plants that are grown on farms that have been free of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides for over 10 years.

CBD doesn't cause the same psychoactive effects as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another molecule in the cannabis plant.

"CBD products will not get you high," said Christina with Purple Leaf Bath Bombs. She's been making CBD-infused products for a little more than a year. "Hemp CBD contains zero THC. When looking for CBD products to buy, be sure the label says that the CBD is from the hemp plant."

Why people use it

CBD is thought to have a variety of health benefits. It's commonly used for anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, and chronic pain. Christina wants more people to try CBD and reduce the use of pharmaceutical drugs. She feels the hemp plant has amazing benefits and she's trying to spread the word to her customers.

If you want to try CBD, Erin said there are a few factors to consider. Check to see if the plant is from the US, as regulations and quality systems are stabilizing here. ONDA uses a patented lipid-infusion method that doesn't strip any part of the hemp.

"It’s important to find companies that are transparent with their infusion or extraction methods," Erin said. "We personally like to steer clear of butane, CO2, or methane extractions."

She also recommends researching the brand, specifically for third-party lab testing. That way you know the CBD is free from heavy metal or pesticides. ONDA has farmers test the hemp within 30 days of harvest to ensure it's within the legal range allowed. That report is sent to the Department of Agriculture. Then, they test the biomass twice in their warehouse. Finally, the oil is tested one more time to ensure the proper dosage.

Selling CBD products

If you plan to sell CBD products, the FDA is still reviewing its regulatory authority. CBD is not approved by the FDA for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of any disease. They have approved a few CBD products, but they've also issued warning letters to companies claiming that it treats Alzheimer's and schizophrenia.

Depending on where you live and the claims you're making, it may not be legal to sell products made with CBD. This questions and answers page has more information.

Projects made with CBD

In DIY bath and body products, CBD oil can add soothing and moisturizing properties. It's thought to be great for those with sensitive or extra dry skin. We partnered with ONDA Wellness for these projects.

"Like any high quality/high nutrient natural consumable product, less disruption and stripping of the plant's ingredients is better for the body to consume," Erin said.

We used the ONDA CBD in this bath bomb project. It's a simple and natural recipe you'll love. The CBD oil helps bind the bath bombs so they hold their shape, and it also moisturizes the skin as you soak. They're scented with relaxing lavender 40/42 essential oil.

We also made this skin-loving CBD Body Balm Stick. It has ONDA CBD oil, mango butter, beeswax, and lavender 40/42 essential oil. It's solid at room temperature and melts on contact with the skin. The salve is moisturizing and great for dry patches like elbows and hands.
