Coloring Your Soap

Our pigments and micas are sold by weight - not volume - so you're getting the most for your money! Since many micas and pigments are very light, it often takes a 2 or even 3 ounce container to fit 1 ounce, by weight into. So, remember, when you're comparing costs, make sure you ask whether the product is sold by weight or volume. For information on using these items, be sure to visit our Instruction Page. Fuchsia Glitter - This is a beautiful color of pink that is more sophisticated than a Baby Doll pink, but isn't so adult that you won't like it yourself! Add a whimisical touch to your lotions, liquid soap base and melt and pour soap with this glitter. Click here to see a photo. To see a picture of this color click here

Iridescent Glitter - This is a basic glitter that picks up the colors around it. This versatile color is perfect for adding a shine and shimmer in your soap or lotions. Glitters are a larger particle than micas so they don't provide as much coloring power but shine very brightly!

Navy Blue Glitter - This is a beautiful dark, navy blue glitter with subtle "teal" highlights.

Red Glitter - Perfect for anything holiday, this red glitter is the brilliant blood red you've come to expect from anything "Candy Apple Red." A fun idea for melt and pour: make candy canes using the Red Glitter and the Iridescent Glitter. Simply make up a flat sheet of clear melt and pour with heavy glitter in both colors, cut into strips, and twist the two colors together.

Shredded Glitter - This is a large particle glitter that is in the form of shreds (instead of flakes). Because of its unique shape, the shredded glitter is exfoliating and is not recommended for children's products (because of their sensitive, developing skin). This shredded glitter is an irridescent glitter and will pick up the colors of the rainbow in your soap.

Silver Glitter - The newest addition to our glitter collection. This silver glitter will add sparkle and magic to any of your soap making projects!

What are True Tone Colorants? Formulated especially for soapers, these liquid colorants provide luminous pigmentation and full saturation in your soap, lotion, and toiletry needs. True Tones (tm) are multi-use colorants made from a combination of FD&C colorants that will give you the hue you are looking for with a minimum of muss and effort. These colorants have a bold and stalwart sticking power in cold process soap as well as liquid soaps, lotions and melt and pour. Note: Please note that these are water soluble products and should not be used for oil based products such as massage oil, lotion bars or lip products. Also, as these are FD&C colorants, they will fade in the sun so be sure to purchase a U.V. inhibitor if you are planning on doing outdoor craft shows.

Canary Yellow True Tone

Suggested Replacement: Labcolor Canary. Uses the same dyes in a more concentrated form.

Fuschia True Tone

Suggested Replacement: Labcolor Fuschia. Uses the same dyes in a more concentrated form.

Peach True Tone

Suggested Replacement: Labcolor Peach. Uses the same dyes in a more concentrated form.

Poppy Orange True Tone

Suggested Replacement: Labcolor Melon Red. Similar dyes in a more concentrated form.

Violet Red True Tone

Suggested Replacement: Labcolor Magenta. Uses similar dyes in a more concentrated form.

Blue- This is ultramarine blue crushed finely and dispersed in pure vegetable glycerin. If you've had clumping problems in your melt and pour before with this colorant, you'll be pleased at the ease of use for this liquid color.

Dark Purple - This is a deep blue based purple that creates a clear, stained glass effect in melt and pour. It is not an opaque color, allowing light to shine through. Usage rate is approximately 12 ml for 16 oz. of melted soap (or 1/2 tsp.).

INCI: Mica, Iron Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Ferric Ferrocyanide

Orange - Perfect for your holiday pumpkin patch soaps or to add that perky color to your citrus soaps, this Orange Liquid is easy to use in melt and pour and cold process soaps. It is FD&C based so it will bleed in melt and pour soap.

Non-Bleeding Red: This colorant is a fantastic bright red that is designed for use in melt and pour with a bonus - it does not bleed! This gel is easy to incorporate into your melt and pour and an ounce will color 10 to 25 pounds of soap (depending on a variety of factors). It looks best in clear soap.

Does not blend well in cold process soap and is NOT recommended for cold process or hot process soap.

INCI: D&C Red 33 (Deionized Water, D&C Red 33, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Citric Acid

Non-bleeding red

Non-Bleeding Violet: This colorant is a basic violet ultramarine that is formulated for use in melt and pour soap. It is non-bleeding and resists fading in the sun much better than FD & C based colorants.

Pink - This ultramarine pink color is evenly dispersed in liquid glycerin so that there is no clumping in melt and pour soap.

Yellow- This non-bleeding yellow is yellow oxide dispersed in liquid (vegetable) glycerin.

New! White (titanium dioxide) - This is a fantastic and easy-to-use white for melt and pour. This is normal titanium dioxide dispersed evenly in liquid glycerin. It mixes into melt and pour with incredible ease and with little to no white color spotting.

INCI: mica, titanium dioxide

Black Oxide: "Midnight", black is a great color to have in any collection -- creates an impressive and classic contrast against white.

Brick Red: This reminds me of a fire house, with all the beautiful bricks setting off the power inside -- it's that great color of deep red with a tinge of orange which makes it a great year round color. Approved for use in cosmetics, including lip products.

To identify the colorant meeting the requirements for labeling purposes in the US, the INCI Name "Iron Oxides" must be used (on your label).

FD & C Yellow No. 5: Perfect for spring and for adding a splash of bright color into your soap! Think of this swirled with red - or with green - or purple - it is spectacular!

New! Titanium Dioxide: "Angel White" natural pigment that is both oil and water soluble. When used in Cold Process add to your base oils and mix well prior to adding the lye water solution. Also perfect for lip stick and mineral makeup.

INCI: Titanium Dioxide
Note: 1 oz. is about 7 teaspoons

Ultramarine Blue: "Lapis", deep, bright & wonderfully blue, this is a beautiful color. A 'must have' to mix with Violet (makes that perfect purple) or to use alone.

Ultramarine Violet: "Light Purple", this is a beautiful match for our "Lilac" fragrance or mix it with our Ultramarine Blue for an amazing dark purple.

Yellow Oxide: A lovely muted earthy yellow, this is a great alternative to FD&C Yellow. Use this anytime you want a more natural look to your soaps. Approved for use in cosmetics, including lip products.

NOTE: To achieve a soft to medium yellow in cold process soap, use 1/4 teaspoon for every 16 oz. of oil. To achieve a medium to dark color in cold process, use 1/2 tsp. for every 16 oz. of oil. Keep in mind that base colors (esepcially some olive or pomace oils) will affect your final outcome.

We now offer three different types of mica: sparkle, pearl, and our new lip balm-safe micas, to help meet all of your soap making needs. Micas are recommended over pigments to use in melt and pour base because they do incorporate easier. We sell micas by weight, not volume - one ounce (powdered) is generally 6 to 8 tablespoons of mica, and a little goes a long way. These micas will give you a gorgeous sparkle or pearl effect in clear soap base.

Cellini Blue: This is a deep, vibrant teal blue color. It is also an edible mica so it can be used in body dust, body butters and lip butters. This mica does require a bit of TLC when stirring in. We recommend mixing it with your fragrance oil (that you're using for the batch) as it is not as easily dispersible as our other micas.

INCI: Mica, FD&C Blue #1, Aluminum Lake

NOTE: This is a bleeding/migrating color. Please remember this when designing your soap. Also, Cellini Blue will morph to purple or mauve in cold process (CP) soap - see example

Copper Mica: Beautiful and shimmering, this color is a delightful color that you can use to tone down too-bright pinks, oranges and reds or just make up a really interesting copper lip color!

Coral Mica: This is a multi-use colorant that you can use in lip balms (yes, it's approved), melt and pour or all types of cold process soap. While the color stays true in lip balms and melt and pour, it does morph to a slightly more orange tone in cold process soap, so keep that in mind if you're doing cold process. This color is a little more difficult to mix into melt and pour than most micas so we recommend mixing it with the fragrance oil before attempting to stir in.

INCI: mica, FD&C Red 40 Lake, Hydrogenated Polysobutene, Palmitic Acid

Luster Black Mica: We love to use a touch of this color for deepening pinks and reds in our lip colors and balms. Also fabulous for a sophisticated dark ribbon swirl through lighter soaps. This mica is a Deep Sparkly black in clear soap and a unique medium gray in opaque soap.

INCI: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide

Red Blue Mica: Pretty iridescent deep pink that shimmers with blue undertones. Our Red/Blue is lovely in clear melt and pour soap and in lip balms - but sadly it fades to a pinkish-gray in Cold process soap. This mica is approved for use in lip products as well as eye shadows.

INCI: Carmine, Titanium Dioxide, Mica
NOTE: Red Blue Mica is safe for use in lip balms and eye shadows.

Red Mica (Cellini Red): This is a wonderful red that is approved for use in lip products. In cold process soap, it goes a nice peach/pink color.

INCI: mica, titanium dioxide, D&C Red 7, hydrogenated polysobutene, palmitic acid

Shamrock Green: This bright, vibrant mica is a bleeding color but makes for a wonderful green! It's safe to use in lip products but does take a little extra work stirring in melt and pour. Use it whenever you need a strong green color.

INCI: Mica, FD&C Yellow #5, Aluminum Lake and FD&C Blue #1 Aluminum Lake

NOTE: This color does not stay green in CP soap.

Yellow: This is a bright yellow mica that is safe for use in lip products. Because of its oil solubility, it is a little more difficult to mix into melt and pour than most micas so we recommend mixing it with the fragrance oil before attempting to stir in.

INCI: Mica, FD&C Yellow #5, Aluminum Lake

New! Mineral Makeup Ingredients

New! Sericite: This silky silver powder is the ideal base for your eye shadows and foundation bases. It feels soft on the skin and provides that “slip” needed for flawless application.

New! Bismuth Oxychloride: This silvery-pink pearlizing agent creates a beautiful shimmer. Some claim that this base can cause irritation on the skin; however, our employee testing has not proven this to be true. We love its shimmer and shine.

Cosmetic Micas

New! Amethyst Purple: This is a deep and rich purple that pairs perfectly with a lavender fragrance in soaps or lotions. Due to the Ferric Ferrocyanide in this mica, it is not recommended to use in lip products. Don’t get discouraged, it makes a lovely mineral make up eye shadow!
