Project Description

These adorable shampoo bars were inspired by the classic Valentine's Day candy.

This recipe was created to gently cleanse while moisturizing the hair. It’s formulated with Foaming Noodles - SCI and Bubble Boost - CAPB, which are surfactants derived from coconuts. They make everything nice and sudsy. Find more surfactants for DIY soap here.

The Heart Clamshell Mold gives the bars a cute shape that fit perfectly in your hand. These molds are reusable, and can double as packaging. The color comes from Pink Quartz Crystal Dye - we recommend adding the color a drop at a time to achieve the perfect hue. Feel free to swap out different colors - find all the Liquid Crystal Dyes here.

You will need:

  • Heart Clamshell Molds
  • 18 oz. Foaming Noodles - SCI
  • 6 oz. Bubble Boost - CAPB
  • 0.8 oz. Cocoa Butter
  • 1.4 oz. BTMS-50
  • 0.8 oz. Sodium Lactate
  • 0.4 oz. Water Soluble Green Tea Extract
  • 0.2 oz. DL-Panthenol
  • 0.4 oz. Berry Blossom Fragrance Oil
  • 4-6 drops Pink Quartz Liquid Crystal Dye
  • 4 mL Geogard 221

Follow these steps:

1

Set up a double boiler - fill a large pot with a small amount of water and bring to a soft boil. Cover the pot with a heat-safe bowl. To the bowl, add 18 ounces of Foaming Noodles and 6 ounces of Bubble Boost. Cover with a lid or foil.

2

In a small heat-safe container, add 0.8 ounces of cocoa butter and 1.4 ounces of BTMS-50. Slowly melt in the microwave using 30 second bursts. Add 0.4 ounces of Berry Blossom Fragrance Oil and stir.

3

In a separate small container, add 0.8 ounces of sodium lactate, 0.4 ounces of water soluble green tea extract, and 0.2 ounces of DL-Panthenol. Stir until the DL-Panthenol is mostly dissolved.

4

After about 15-20 minutes, check on the Foaming Noodles and Bubble Boost. Stir to help them heat evenly. The Foaming Noodles will not fully melt, but the ingredients will begin to form a thick gel-like paste. Allow them to heat for another 10-15 minutes.

5

Turn off the heat to the double boiler, but keep the bowl on the pot of hot water. Add the butter mixture and sodium lactate mixture to the surfactants and stir thoroughly. Add 4-6 drops of Liquid Crystal Dye until you have a soft color - stir thoroughly until there are no streaks.

6

Remove the pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to about 160° F. Mix in 4 mL of Geogard 221 and stir thoroughly.

7

Working quickly, spoon the shampoo mixture into the heart molds. With gloved hands, press the mixture firmly into the mold to smooth.

8

Allow the shampoo bars to cool for 3-4 hours, up to overnight. Gently press out of the mold and allow to cure for 3-7 days.

9

To use, apply the shampoo bar directly to wet hair and lather. Or, lather the bar in your hand or loofah and apply the lather to wet hair. Rinse and continue your hair routine as usual. Enjoy!
