Silk and Lace Soap Project
This sophisicate and romantic cold process soap features a rich black base swirled with a soft pink drop swirl, creating a striking contrast that feels both bold and elegant.
The true showstopper is the lace impression on top. A piece of lace is carefully placed over the soap, sprinkled with shimmering mica, and later removed after curing. The result is a beautifully textured finish that looks intricate and refined, while still being achievable for new soap makers.
What You Need:
Instructions
You will need:
33 oz Lots of Lather Quick Mix
1.75 oz Amber Silk Fragrance Oil
4.75 oz Sodium Hydroxie Lye
10.65 oz Distilled Water
Peach Shimmer Mica
Black Oxide Pigment
1 tbsp Sodium Lactate
Follow these steps:
COLOR PREP: Mix ½ tsp of Black Oxide into ¾ tbsp of oil, then mix ¼ tsp Peach Shimmer mica into ½ tbsp of oil.
FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 1.75 oz Amber Silk Fragrance Oil into a glass container. Set aside.
SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.
1
Slowly and carefully add your lye to your water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 1 tablespoon of sodium lactate to help the bars harden more quickly.
2
Fully melt the entire bag of Lots of Lather Quick Mix until it's clear and there is no cloudiness. Shake the bag to mix up all the oils and pour into a large heat-safe container. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 100-120° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend until thin trace.
3
Before adding fragrance oil, separate out 10-12 ounces of soap batter and set aside.
4
With the remaining soap batter, add fragrance and dispersed black oxide. Whisk to combine.
5
Add the dispersed peach mica to the smaller container of soap batter. This will remain unscented.
6
Pour nearly all of your black soap into your silicone mold. Just don't scrape the bowl so you'll have a small amount left over.
7
Slowly pour the pink soap into the black soap using the Drop Swirl technique, pouring from various heights.
8
Spread the small amount of remaining black soap batter across the top of your soap to hide any pink from the previous step. This will give a nice even base for step 9.
9
Carefully place a piece of lace over the top of the soap, very lightly pressing the lace into the soap so that the lace is touching the surface of the soap, but not so deep in that the soap is coming up through the holes in the lace.
10
Using a small sifter, sprinkle peach mica over top of the lace. Sprinkle until you have a solid layer of mica all over the lace. Spritz with alcohol to help set the lace pattern.
11
Let sit for 24-48 hours before very carefully peeling off the lace to reveal the delicate pattern. We recommend blowing on the top of the soap before removing the lace to help remove any excess mica. Enjoy!
