The Smoked Magnolia Soap Project pairs a smoky, floral fragrance with a striking black and white swirl over a hidden poppy seed base. This cold process project walks through the full method, from measuring and melting oils to swirling the batter and pouring the final loaf.

Poured in a tall loaf mold, it slices into clean, dramatic bars with as much visual interest as scent.

Instructions

You will need:

  • 7.75 oz Palm Oil
  • 7.75 oz Coconut Oil
  • 6.2 oz Sunflower Oil
  • 3.1 oz Apricot Kernel Oil
  • 3.1 oz Mango Butter
  • 1.55 oz Shea Butter
  • 1.55 oz Castor Oil
  • 4.35 oz lye
  • 9.7 oz distilled water
  • 1.75 oz Smoked Magnolia Fragrance Oil
  • Black Oxide Pigment
  • Poppy Seeds
  • 12 inch Loaf Silicone Mold

COLORANT PREP:  Add ½ tsp black oxide pigment to 1 tbsp of apricot kernel oil. Mix thoroughly, set aside.

Follow these steps:

Measure out all solid at room temperature oils/butters (palm, coconut, mango and shea butter) and add to a bowl. Microwave in 30 second bursts until all the oils are melted.

Add the remaining oils to the bowl and set aside.

Measure 4.35 oz of lye and pour into 9.7 oz of distilled water, mix thoroughly, set aside to cool.

When the oils have cooled to between 100-105°F and the lye mixture is between 115-120°F, add 1 tbsp of sodium lactate (optional) to the lye water, then add the lye water to the oil mixture. Stick blend until a thin trace is achieved.

Add 1.75 oz (the entire bottle) to the soap, stir until well combined.

Split the soap batter into 3 containers, one container with 22.5 oz of soap and the other two containing 11.5 oz of soap each.

In the largest container, mix 1 tbsp of poppy seeds (adjust to your preference) into the soap batter. Pour the entire container into the 12” tall loaf mold. Tamp out any air pockets or bubbles.

In the two smaller containers, mix the dispersed black oxide into one of the soap batter. Leave the other portion plain.

Pour the black batter into the white batter in a circular motion, holding the bowl up pretty high so the black sinks into the white.

Carefully pour the black and white swirled soap into the mold on top of the poppy seed layer. If needed, pour over the back of a spoon to keep the swirled layer sitting on top.
