This recipe is made by embedding chopped soap into a fresh batch. The cheerful color palette is inspired by the citrus scent!

This Sunshine Poppies Soap is the perfect cheerful project for spring and beyond! It's scented with Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil, which is a fresh combination of lily, magnolia, mimosa, and musk. To get the speckled pattern, this project requires 2 batches of cold process soap. The first batch is split into 5 colors, allowed to harden, and chopped into small pieces. Then they're mixed into a fresh batch of white soap.

This chopped embed technique is a great way to use up extra soap, or to use a batch that didn't quite turn out. That's what we did in the Chopped Embed Soap Tutorial. Because this batch is mostly embeds, we don't recommend using melt and pour - cold process soap works best.

Instructions

You will need:

  • Embeds:
  • 3 oz. Avocado Oil (15%)
  • 6 oz. Olive Oil (30%)
  • 5 oz. Palm Oil (25%)
  • 5 oz. Coconut Oil (25%)
  • 1 oz. Shea Butter (5%)
  • 2.8 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
  • 6.3 oz. Distilled Water
  • 1 tsp. Sodium Lactate
  • 1.3 oz. Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil
  • Yellow Mica
  • Sunset Orange Mica
  • Racing Stripe Orange Mica
  • Red Mica
  • Base:
  • 10" Silicone Loaf Mold
  • 2.6 oz. Avocado Oil (15%)
  • 5.1 oz. Olive Oil (30%)
  • 4.3 oz. Palm Oil (25%)
  • 4.3 oz. Coconut Oil (25%)
  • 0.9 oz. Shea Butter (5%)
  • 2.4 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
  • 5.3 oz. Distilled Water
  • 1 tsp. Sodium Lactate
  • 0.7 oz. Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil
  • 1.5 tsp. Titanium Dioxide

Follow these steps:

MAKE THE EMBEDS

FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 1.3 ounces of Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil into a small glass container and set aside.

COLORANT PREP: In separate containers, disperse 1/2 teaspoon of Yellow Mica and Racing Stripe Orange Mica into 1/2 tablespoon of lightweight liquid oil (such as sunflower or sweet almond oil). In separate containers, disperse 1 teaspoon of Red Mica and Sunset Orange Mica into 1 tablespoon of lightweight liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to get rid of clumps.

SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.

1

Slowly and carefully add 2.8 ounces of lye to 6.3 ounces of distilled water. Gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved. Let it cool. Once it's about 130° F, stir in 1 teaspoon of sodium lactate and set aside.

2

Melt and combine 3 ounces of avocado oil, 6 ounces of oilve oil, 5 ounces of coconut oil, 1 ounce of shea butter, and 5 ounces of palm oil (remember to fully melt then mix your entire container of palm oil before portioning). Once the lye water and oils have cooled to 130° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils. Pulse and stir with the stick blender to bring the mixture to a light trace.

3

Whisk in all 1.3 ounces of the Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil. Split the batch into 5 equal containers, it's okay to eyeball it (each container will have about 6 ounces). Add the following dispersed colorant to each batch and whisk to incorporate.

  • Container A (yellow): 1 teaspoon Yellow Mica
  • Container B (light orange): 1/2 teaspoon Racing Stripe Orange Mica
  • Container C (orange): 1 teaspoon Sunset Orange Mica
  • Container D (pink): 1/4 teaspoon Red Mica
  • Container E (red): 1 1/2 teaspoon Red Mica + 1/2 teaspoon Sunset Orange Mica

4

Pour each color into separate small molds. We recommend a mold with individual cavities of about 3-4 ounces with smooth edges. It can be any shape you like. We used the 12 Bar Rectangle Silicone Mold and poured each color into 2 cavities to create 10 shallow bars.

5

Allow the soap to harden for at least 24 hours. If it's still sticky, give it at least another 24 hours. The soap needs to be firm enough to cut into small pieces. Once it's ready, unmold. Use a sharp unserrated knife to cut small pieces of each color. Don't worry about them being uniform or perfect - the different shapes and sizes makes the soap look interesting! Set embeds aside while you prep the base.

MAKE THE BASE

FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 0.7 ounces of Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil into a small glass container and set aside.

SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.

1

Slowly and carefully add 2.4 ounces of lye to 5.3 ounces of distilled water. Gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and let it cool. Once it's about 130° F, stir in 1 teaspoon of sodium lactate and set aside.

2

Melt and combine 2.6 ounces of avocado oil, 5.1 ounces of oilve oil, 4.3 ounces of coconut oil, 0.9 ounces of shea butter, and 4.3 ounces of palm oil (remember to fully melt then mix your entire container of palm oil before portioning). Add 1.5 teaspoons of titanium dioxide and use the stick blender to disperse and get rid of clumps. Once the lye water and oils have cooled to 130° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils. Pulse and stir with the stick blender to bring the mixture to a light trace.

3

Add the 0.7 ounces of Sunshine Poppies Fragrance Oil and whisk to incorporate.

4

Add the embeds to a large bowl and then add all of the white soap. Stir until the embeds are completely combined. Pour the mixture into the 10" Silicone Loaf Mold. Firmly tap the mold on the counter to help the soap settle, to make sure there are no air bubbles trapped from the embeds, and to help it settle into the corners. Use a spoon to smooth the top.

5

Allow the soap to harden for 1-2 days. Unmold and cut into bars. We used a soap shaver to smooth the top and a soap beveller to bevel the edges. This is optional but gives the bars a clean look. Allow the bars to cure for 4-6 weeks. Enjoy!
