Mocha Mousse Soap Project
This luxurious soap is inspired by Pantone's 2025 Color of the Year: Mocha Mousse.
The rich chocolate brown hue is created by blending Brown Oxide Pigment with Ultramarine Pink Oxide Pigment. We chose the new Espresso Martini Fragrance Oil for a luxurious coffee scent without the dark discoloration.
What You Need:
Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
- Espresso Martini Fragrance Oil - 4 oz
- Basic Quick Mix - 54 oz
- Sodium Hydroxide Lye
- Sodium Lactate - 4 oz
- Brown Oxide Pigment - 1 oz
- Ultramarine Pink Oxide Pigment - 1 oz
- Cappuccino Mica - 1 oz
EQUIPMENT:
- 10 inch Silicone Loaf Mold
Instructions
You will need:
- 10" Silicone Loaf Mold
- 35 oz. Basic Quick Mix
- 4.5 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
- 2.5 oz Espresso Martini Fragrance Oil
- 10 oz. Distilled Water (10% water discount)
- 2 tsp. Sodium Lactate (optional, but recommended)
- Espresso Martini Fragrance OIl
- Brown Oxide Pigment
- UltraMarine Pink Oxide Pigment
- Cappuccino Mica
FRAGRANCE PREP: In separate glass containers, measure 2.5 ounces of Espresso Martini Fragrance Oil. Set aside.
COLORANT PREP: In seperate containers, disperse 1 teaspoon of Brown Oxide Pigment and 1 teaspoon of UltraMarine Pink Oxide Pigment into 1 tablespoon of sunflower or sweet almond oil (or any other liquid oil).Use a mini mixer to help get rid of any clumps.
Optional: To ensure the titanium dioxide blends smoothly into the soap, we recommend micronizing it before dispersing it in oil. Use a coffee grinder to break up any clumps of color and prevent streaks of white from showing in the final soap. We like to use a coffee grinder that has a removable stainless steel mixing area for easy cleaning.
SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.
Follow these steps:
1
Slowly and carefully add 4.5 ounces of lye to 10 ounces of water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 2 teaspoons of sodium lactate to help the bars harden more quickly.
2
Fully melt the bag of Basic Quick Mix, shake thoroughly to combine, and measure out 35 ounces into a large mixing bowl. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 120° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend until thin trace.
3
Add all of the dispersed Brown Oxide Pigment. Slowly add in the dispersed UltraMarine Pink Oxide Pigment 1/2 teaspoon at a time, whisking thoroughly. Check your color, adding more pink as needed until you have a shade you're happy with.
4
Add all of the measured Espresso Martini Fragrance Oil. Mix with a whisk.
5
Check the consistency of the soap. You want it to be a medium trace to create texture on top. If it's still quite thin, stick blend using short bursts until it becomes the texture of a milkshake.
6
Pour all of the soap into the 10" Silicone Loaf Mold. Gently tap on the counter to get rid of bubbles.
7
To create texture, use a small spoon to push the soap toward the center. If the soap is not holding its shape, wait 2-3 minutes and try again.
8
Sprinkle a small amount of Cappcuino Mica for a bit of added sparkle. Spritz with 99% isopropyl alcohol to help prevent soda ash.
9
Allow the soap to stay in the mold for 2-3 days. Unmold and cut into bars. Allow the soap to cure for 4-6 weeks and enjoy!
