What’s the difference between silicone, plastic, and wood soap molds?

Wood molds work well for cold process soap in big quantities, plastic molds produce crisp shapes and can be used as packaging, and silicone molds are flexible and easy to release. Each kind has a certain advantage based on your project.

How do I prevent my soap from sticking to the mold?

Soap sticking to the mold can be frustrating, but the fix depends on what you’re making.

  • Cold process soap: Use a flexible mold like silicone to make unmolding easier. A harder recipe helps too—try adding sodium lactate or using a small water discount. And don’t rush it—let your soap sit for the full 2–3 days before unmolding so it firms up properly.
  • Melt and pour soap: Stick with a flexible mold and gently break the air-lock around the edges before you pop the bars out. That little bit of movement helps release them cleanly.
  • Bath bombs: The key is packing the mixture tightly into the mold while it’s still soft. Once it sets, it’ll hold its shape and release much more easily.
