How Long Should You Leave Cold Process Soap in the Mold?

Most cold process soap is ready to unmold in 2 to 4 days. Wood and silicone molds release soap the fastest, while plastic molds can take up to 2 weeks because their airtight seal restricts moisture from escaping. Your recipe matters just as much as your mold. High hard-oil recipes (coconut, palm, cocoa butter) firm up quickly, while high soft-oil recipes like Castile can need a full week or more. Adding 1 teaspoon of sodium lactate per pound of oils to your cooled lye water is the most reliable way to speed up unmolding by 1 to 2 days. When in doubt, do a gentle press test. If your finger leaves a deep imprint, give it another 24 hours.
