Maker of the Month: Black Honey
For Breona with Black Honey, skincare is personal. Her cousin had a rare skin condition, which meant Breona could never hug her. She started making high-quality and affordable products to help people in similar situations. Customers love her luxurious masks, toners, whipped soaps, and more. Get to know Breona below!
How
long have you been making bath products, and how did you get started? How
long have you been selling your products?
I started
making products right before the pandemic began in 2020. I have been making products
for about a year and a half. I have been selling products for a
year.
What do you love most about making
bath and body products?
What I love most about making
bath and body products is the wide spectrum available for creativity. You can try so
many different oils, butters, and fragrances; the products achievable are
endless.
What inspires
you to create?
Growing up, one of the hardest things
to grasp was why I couldn’t hug or hold my little cousin. She had severe
EB (Epidermolysis bullosa). She was so innocent but so fragile, and it broke my
heart. I knew then that I wanted to work with skincare to help others who have
skincare conditions that cannot afford expensive solutions. I wanted to be a
healthier and affordable alternative. As a soldier, I never really had much time to
really start a business, but COVID-19 changed that. I wanted to make a change for my
friends, family, and my community.
Your
skincare line looks amazing. What are some of your favorite products to make and
use?
My favorite products to use are our Yes Yoni
Soap (feminine soap), and our African Black Soap & Turmeric Face
Wash.
Who’s
another maker you admire? What do you love about their work?
There’s a maker in Canada, the owner of Black Seal Soap; her
work is amazing! I love her soap art, packaging, and her product photos. Some of her
proceeds, depending on what is going on in the world, go to great causes
and I love that.
What advice
would you give to someone who wanted to get started?
Don’t give up! It’s all about trial and error. I
cannot count how many times I didn’t achieve my desired outcome but with
practice and patience, you’ll do just fine!
Have you
experienced a fail? How did you work through it, and what did you
learn?
Ha! Yes I have, before I realized that the
cold process method for soap was for me, I messed up so many batches of soap trying
to achieve the hot process method. It was rough, but I didn’t give
up.
What plans do you have for
your business moving forward?
I plan on getting my
esthetician license in the future and opening a spa and having my products
featured in house.
Breona's top Bramble Berry picks
- Aloe vera liquid - I love using it in place of water in some of my recipes.
- Foaming Bath Butter - It’s essential for whipped soaps and sugar scrubs.
- Fragrance oils - There are so many to choose from, they all smell so lovely.
- Goat Milk Melt and Pour Soap Base - One of my best-selling soaps is made with it. It doesn’t dry out your skin, I love it!
What’s your
favorite Bramble Berry project?
My favorite Bramble
Berry project I have tried was the Pumpkin Spice Latte Sugar Scrub
project. I love that it was made with walnut shells for extra exfoliation.
It smells just like a Starbucks PSL!
