Maker of the Month: Poetry & Bloom

Kay founded Poetry & Bloom in 2022 after discovering her passion for creating beautiful handmade soap. Meet Kay!

How long have you been making bath and body products, and what led you to create your business?
I've been making cold process soap for over three years. I started with melt and pour soap from a craft store to make a gift for a friend. After taking a cold process soap making class, I dedicated many hours to practicing and self-learning. In early 2022, I founded Poetry & Bloom Soap Co.

What sets your products apart, what makes them unique?
My handmade soap features feminine floral scents with a sophisticated, old charm while still maintaining a modern touch. This unique combination of qualities, plus thoughtful packaging, sets Poetry & Bloom apart from other soaps on the market. Since the start, I have been committed to creating high-quality, handcrafted soaps that are both beautiful and functional.

Where do you find your creative inspiration?
I often find inspiration from traveling and local farmers markets, gardens, and nature. This approach allows me to capture the essence of botanicals, their colors, and scents!

What has been your biggest challenge to navigate as a small business owner?
My main challenge is organizing time for soap making and preparing for the busy season for all selling channels (online marketplace, wholesale, and vending at local market). However, working full-time in finance has taught me valuable skills that help me better manage my small business. I'm excited to enhance my time management techniques to balance both successfully!

What advice would you give to makers looking to start their own business from home?

Start small and stay within your budget. It's all part of the fun! Use free online resources for soap making, they're so helpful. Dedicate 1-2 days weekly if you're working full-time, it's totally doable! Select unique scents that you love and promote your creations on social media with excitement.

What other makers do you admire, and what do you like about their work?
Ashley Marie Soap. I admire her authenticity and ability to produce large quantities of beautiful cold process soap!

What are your dreams for Poetry & Bloom? Where would you like to see your business in 5 or 10 years?
The objective is to expand the business by offering a wider range of eco-friendly bath, body, home fragrance, and spa products. There may also be an opportunity to offer floral-themed accessories and accompanying products.

What are your three must-have Bramble Berry products and why?

Oatmeal Milk and Honey Fragrance Oil: It’s a creamy and mild scent, ideal for my Honey + Oat Soap.

Peaceful Lavender Fragrance Oil: The sophisticated lavender notes have a soft floral aroma which I really love, so balanced and not overly dominated by lavender.

Orange 10X Essential Oil: I love it because it offers a perfect orange scent that lasts longer, which is difficult to find elsewhere.
