Maker of the Month: O'Soy Candle Co.

O’Soy Candles started back in 2009 when Justine decided to try making her own candles as a creative hobby. What began as a small project soon grew into a business built on clean ingredients and unique scent blends. Meet Justine!

How long have you been making candles, and how did you get started?

I started making candles back in my early 20s (around 2009). At the time, I was constantly buying candles to fill my apartment, until one day I thought, why not try making them myself? It seemed like the perfect way to save a little money while also fueling my creative side. What started as a small experiment quickly grew into something bigger. I shared what I was working on through social media and before I knew it, friends and family were reaching out to buy my candles. From those early experiments and sales, O’Soy steadily grew into the candle company it has become today!

What sets O'Soy Candles apart, what makes them unique?

I think what sets O’Soy apart is the heart behind every candle. Each candle is hand-poured with clean ingredients and with the intention to burn slowly, giving our customers maximum burn times. Our blends are true to their note profiles and throw really well, but are never overwhelming or synthetic smelling. Beyond the candles themselves, O’Soy is about connection. Customers know me as the maker and my personality and story are woven into the brand. I think that personal touch paired with high-quality craftsmanship and care is what makes O’Soy truly unique!

Where do you find inspiration?

Honestly, everywhere! A lot of my scents come from special, nostalgic moments or everyday things like walking down Main Street at Disneyland in the fall, baking in the kitchen with my son, or just sitting on the porch on a crisp autumn morning. Those little moments usually spark the best ideas and I love the challenge of turning a moment or memory into a scent for everyone to relate to and enjoy.

What has been your biggest challenge to navigate as a small business owner?

The hardest part has been juggling the creative side with the business side. Things like shipping, finances, and staying on top of orders. I love making candles, but running a business means wearing all the hats at once. It’s a challenge for sure, but it’s worth it.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

Blending fragrances is definitely my favorite! It’s kind of like painting with scent. You never know exactly how it’s going to turn out until it clicks, and then it just feels right. I also love designing the labels to match the mood of each candle. Once everything comes together…it’s the best feeling. 

Are there other makers in the industry that have inspired you? What do you love about their work?

I admire anyone who shows up authentically and puts their own spin on things. I especially love when makers support their community and lift up other small businesses. It’s something I try to do myself. I love connecting with other makers and carving out time to help them if and whenever possible! What advice would you give to someone looking to start a small business?

Start small, keep it simple, and don’t compare yourself to everyone else. Focus on making something you’re proud of and share your story. Be as original as possible. People connect with authenticity and that’s something no one else can replicate.

What plans do you have for your business moving forward?

My dream is to scale the business while maintaining that personal, story-driven feel that makes O’Soy truly special. I’d love for the business to grow to a point of operating out of a smaller warehouse or storefront where I can host workshops, events and to just have a workspace that’s more fluid than what I currently am working with. I envision a space where it feels cozy and inviting for myself, employees and customers/guests.

What are your must-have Bramble Berry products?

I love Bramble Berry fragrance oils for my line. They’re always super consistent and the scents are beautiful and inspiring! Specifically: Autumn Fig Harvest, Driftwood and Amber, and Vanilla Oak Fragrance Oil!
Also, Bramble Berry DIY kits! I LOVE these kits for my own mental health benefits. The DIY kits allow me time to make products for myself to use and keep outside of candles. I will even have my son join me in making DIY kits. It’s great bonding time! The DIY kits are just an all-around favorite for me personally.
