September Maker of the Month: ThatMakeScentsCo.
I started making bath and body products earlier this year. My motivation stemmed from my own experience with sensitive skin, which made me increasingly aware of the harsh chemicals often found in many products. I wanted to create clean, safe, and gentle alternatives that people like me can use with confidence.

What sets your products apart, what makes them unique?
What sets my products apart is that each scent is inspired by cherished memories, making them truly unique and personal. I put a lot of creativity into naming the products and crafting distinct scents by blending fragrance oils to create something entirely new. This approach allows me to offer products that are not only fragrant but also deeply meaningful.
Where do you find your creative inspiration?
I find creative inspiration through my childhood and heritage as a Mexican-American. I draw from memories of foods, drinks, and even everyday moments, like a Sunday morning when my mom would clean with Fabuloso. These experiences allow me to infuse my products with a personal and cultural touch, creating designs and scents that resonate on a deeper level.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month Mean to you, as a Latina small business owner?
Hispanic Heritage Month holds special significance for me as a Latina small business owner. It's a time to celebrate and honor the rich cultural traditions, history, and contributions of the Hispanic community. For me, it's also an opportunity to reflect on my own heritage and the ways it has shaped my journey as an entrepreneur. It’s a moment to take pride in my identity, to showcase the unique aspects of my culture through my products, and to inspire others in my community to embrace their roots and pursue their passions.
What advice would you give to makers looking to start their own business?
My advice to makers looking to start their own business from home is: don't be afraid to ask for help or seek guidance when you need it. Starting a business can be overwhelming, but reaching out to others for support or advice can make a huge difference. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to do it all alone—there are resources and communities out there that can help you along the way.
How do you balance making products with content creation, managing your social media pages, and website?
Balancing making with content creation, managing social media pages, and updating the website requires a lot of organization. Since I work full-time, it can be challenging to find time, but I make sure to allocate specific periods in my day for these tasks. Staying organized and setting aside dedicated time helps me manage everything effectively despite a busy schedule.
What other makers do you admire, and what do you like about their work?
Velas Del Alma is a talented Latina candle maker based in Long Beach, CA. We have been mutually supportive of each other's journeys, and it's truly wonderful to have someone like her to cheer you on. Her products are exceptional, crafted with care and attention to detail. As a pet owner herself, she understands the potential toxins in store-bought candles and is dedicated to creating pet-friendly alternatives.
Sweet Aurora is a talented Colombiana entrepreneur, specializing in candles and bath & body products. Her bath products have truly impressed me, and her market displays are nothing short of incredible. We often connect over our shared experiences, discussing our booths, future products, and enjoying a good laugh over memes. Like me, she balances a 9-5 corporate job with her passion, making our journeys particularly relatable.
I met the owner of Casita Michi this year after following her and her business for some time. As a Bay Area native, she creates candles deeply rooted in her cultura, and she embodies the spirit of a true Jefa. Her journey is truly inspiring for all Latina business owners, especially as she was the first to have her candles featured in Macy's. Despite being in the same industry, she remains incredibly humble and supportive, always encouraging others to succeed.
What are your dreams for ThatMakesScentsCo.? Where would you like to see your business in 5 or 10 years?
My dream for ThatmakescentsCo is to have a storefront in the Mission District of San Francisco. I envision it as a vibrant space where Latina and women-owned products are celebrated and supported. I would also love to have a studio there where I can create my products. In the future, I hope to see my creations reach international markets, especially in Mexico. Ultimately, I want people to love and appreciate what I do and to find joy in my products.
What are three of your must-have Bramble Berry products, and why do you love them?
It's hard to pick just three, but if I had to choose, I'd go with the lip balm tubes, Lots of Lather Quick Mix, and Apple Sage Fragrance Oil. The lip balm tubes are excellent quality and very affordable. The Lots of Lather Quick Mix is a staple in my soap-making because it works so well and delivers great results. And Apple Sage Fragrance Oil? It’s absolutely perfect—chef's kiss—for adding a wonderful scent to my products.
