Maker of the Month: Beehouse Soap
Mithila is a pediatrician, soap maker, and the founder of Beehouse Soap. She discovered the art of soap making over a decade ago as a creative escape from her stressful job as a doctor. Meet Mithila!Â

I’ve been making cold process soap for about 12 years. During the COVID pandemic, being a doctor was very difficult. Making soap and creating art became a release for all of the despair I felt from the state of the world. I made so much soap that I had too much to give my office staff! So I started my own business to share my creativity with others.
Where do you find your creative inspiration?
I find my inspiration from my family and community and nature around me. Art exists almost everywhere if you can notice it. I live by the shore, so many of my soaps are beach or ocean themed.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?
My favorite part of making cold process soap is combining both my love for art and science together in one creative endeavor. I rarely make the same bar twice and I draw on my creativity to create miniature works of art in the bars.
What advice would you give to makers looking to start their own business from home?Â
My best advice would be to just try it! If you feel that you have the heart and motivation to put yourself out there and create something to share with the world, then just do it!
How do you balance your career as a pediatrician with running your small business?
I am constantly trying to find the balance. My job as a pediatrician is quite demanding. But the time I put into soap making is like therapy for me and creates balance.

What other makers do you admire, and what do you like about their work?
I have found so much inspiration from Teri at Tree Marie Soapworks with her explanations of the science and art of soap making. Also, I love Holly from Kapia Mera Soapworks for her beautiful natural recipes. Finally, Anne Marie from Bramble Berry has been an inspiration to me from the start. I bought her book 12 years ago on soap making and couldn’t put it down. I still look at it today!Â
What are your dreams for Beehouse Soap? Where would you like to see your business in 5 or 10 years?
I would love to be able to put more time into the business to make more product and explore new designs and recipes. It would be so wonderful to have people sell my bars in their stores. I have been working on giving back to the community through teaching soap classes as a collaboration with an herbalist, and I would love to see this ripple into my community as a larger project.
I’d have to say: Magnolia and Tonka, Energy, and Jasmine Fragrance Oils. I have so many favorites though, way too many to name!
