Support the CROWN Act With Us

We're celebrating the launch of our new hair care collection with a donation to the Legal Defense Fund helping to pass the Crown Act.

What is the CROWN Act?

The CROWN Act is a law that prohibits race-based discrimination that denies educational and employment opportunities because of natural hair texture or protective hairstyles. These styles include braids, locs, twists, and Bantu knots.

23 US states have already adopted the CROWN Act into law.

What is hair discrimination?

Hair discrimination is when employers, educators, and others in positions of authority see natural and protective hairstyles for folks with textured hair as unprofessional. This robs people wearing their hair in a natural and traditional way of opportunities.

Natural hair is more prone to breakage and damage from environmental factors, and these protective styles prevent that damage by limiting the hair’s exposure to the elements. These hairstyles also carry cultural importance for BIPOC people.

Black people experience discrimination based on these styles. Studies show that more than 20% of Black women have been sent home from work because of these styles, and that Black women’s hair is 2.5 times more likely to be viewed as unprofessional by an employer.

How do we stop it?

Creating new laws takes time and a lot of work. The Legal Defense Fund is working tirelessly to end hair discrimination, and advocates for the passage of the CROWN Act in all 50 states.

This month, we’ll give $1 from every purchase from our new Hair Care Collection to the Legal Defense Fund in order to support the fight to end hair discrimination.

After you’ve purchased some great ingredients for DIY hair care projects, you can also support the CROWN Act by signing this petition for the CROWN Act, and by contacting your legislators.
