Maker of the Month: Moon Love Bath

Deborah with Moon Love Bath has a clear goal - she wants to make people feel good. She started creating candles to encourage self-care, which is something most of us struggle with. And it worked! Customers love her clever and cosmic-inspired candles, bath bombs, body oils, and more. Get to know Deborah below!

How long have you been making DIY bath and body products, and how did you get started?
The idea of Moon Love Bath started in 2018 after the birth of my daughter. I suddenly had more free time on my hands, and after connecting with people online through blogging, I realized that self-care is a struggle for so many of us. I started hand-crafting an all-natural, vegan candle line, which quickly grew to include our bath and body as well. With every product, I’m hoping to create an experience that brings nothing but good vibes, in order to care for the body as a whole. Mental and emotional health has been a journey for me, and Moon Love Bath is my own personal form of self-care.

How long have you been selling your products?
I started selling them last year shortly after I realized it was something I really enjoy doing.

What do you love most about making bath and body products?
I absolutely love coming up with names for the products. It’s my favorite part of the process because that’s where I get to be the most creative.

What inspires you to create?
I’m easily inspired by things with personality and cosmic themes. I find that’s what makes my products so relatable. I’m a very empathetic person so I tend to understand a lot of what people want and so that’s what I strive for.

What's your favorite candle scent? Any tips for getting a great throw?
Cinnamon Cocoa. It literally makes me want to cozy up in my favorite hoodie and watch mysteries all day.

For a great throw I find working with particular scents provide that natural strong scent. But when working with scents not as strong, especially with soy wax, I always recommend pouring your fragrance at 185° F for it to blend with the wax to get the best throw.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to get started?
Find your niche. I think that’s the most important. It’s what will help distinguish your brand from others. I went in with the mindset of wanting to be authentic. I wanted to stand out, thus creating something in light of my deepest obsessions and relatability.

Who’s another maker you admire? What do you love about their work?
Kay Creates, LLC. She inspires so much with what she does and I am obsessed with her attention to detail. She has progressed so much in a short amount of time and I strive to be as successful as she is.

Have you experienced a fail? How did you work through it, and what did you learn?
I have experienced a fail that hurt my self-esteem. I did my second market ever and had sold only a single item. I constantly blamed myself for not pushing my product and questioned if it was even good enough. But what I ended up learning was that I hadn’t been in the right environment. I was an area where the people were far older than I realized. And they didn’t understand the wittiness behind the idea of my products and what they were about. I should have checked out the scene before setting up shop.

What plans do you have for your business moving forward?
The ultimate goal is to eventually have my own storefront. I never knew it was something I wanted until I started this business and now I would stop at nothing to get there. This is something I know I want to accomplish. And I will.

Deborah's top Bramble Berry picks

  • Optiphen - It is my favorite preservative because it's paraben-free. That is what makes it harmless to your skin.
  • Cinnamon Cocoa Fragrance Oil - I truly love it because it smells like a warm hug.
  • Mango butter - It’s what makes my body butters so smooth to perfection.
  • Golden Wax 464 - This is my favorite type of vegan soy wax. Without it, there would be no candles.

What’s the first Bramble Berry project you tried?
The first Bramble Berry project I tried was the Violet Sugar Scrub Cubes. They were the easiest by far and I still make them occasionally for personal use. I can’t wait to make them for the holidays!
