Hosting a DIY Bath Bomb Making Party

Craft parties are a wonderful way to connect with friends and family. In fact, you can read about Why You Should Throw a Craft Party.

Sometimes it can be hard to choose a DIY project that will work well with multiple people, and a lot of times we end up making crafts that have no other practical use.

When you throw a DIY bath bomb crafting party, not only do you and your guests get to participate in and bond over an easy craft, but you each end up with beautiful bath bombs to keep!

Hosting a DIY Bath Bomb Party

What do you need for a bath bomb making party?

You’ll need to have some ingredients on hand to make bath bombs with your guests, but the good news is that bath bombs are actually pretty easy to make. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need.

  • Baking soda. Baling soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is one of the key ingredients in bath bombs that helps them fizz.
  • Citric acid. Citric acid reacts with the baking soda to make your bath bombs fizz. This comes in a powder or crystal form, so it won’t activate the reaction too soon.
  • Witch hazel. Witch hazel is what you’ll use to add moisture to the mix if it’s too dry to stick together.
  • Oils. Oils mixed in with your bath bombs help add a luxurious feel to your bath, and they help soften and protect your skin, too.
  • Polysorbate 80. Polysorbate 80 is a water soluble emulsifier that helps your oils mix in with the bathwater instead of pooling on top. It’s great to use if you’re adding oils or colorants.
  • Fragrance. What’s better than a bath with a lovely smell? Adding fragrance oils or essential oils to your bath bombs can create a more relaxing experience. Providing multiple fragrances lets your guests make their own unique creations.
  • Color. Color is optional, but will make your bath bombs pleasing to the eye. We love micas for their versatility and light shimmer, and our Liquid Crystal Dyes also work great in bath bombs. Providing a few color choices lets your guests make their bath bombs unique.
  • The extras. There’s a huge variety of extras you can add to make your bath bomb a little extra special. Salts, clays, flower petals, glitter, botanical extracts… the only limit is your imagination.

You’re also going to want some tools for throwing a DIY bath bomb making party.

  • Bowls. You’ll need bowls to mix up your ingredients in. You’ll want separate bowls for each person in your party.
  • Utensils. You’ll want to provide spoons, spatulas, or stir sticks for your guests to use for mixing.
  • Droppers. For fragrance oils and essential oils especially, droppers make it easy to add just enough and not too much. Have enough droppers so your guests can have a few each.
  • Gloves. A pair of gloves for each person helps keep the bath bomb mixture clean.
  • Bath bomb molds. You can make bath bombs without the mold, shaping them by hand. Having bath bomb molds can give you a variety of shapes to use and create very evenly shaped and sized bath bombs. Our plastic clamshell molds allow all participants to use their own molds, and they double as packaging so your guests have a convenient way to take their bath bombs home.

That might feel like a long list. If you’ve never made bath bombs before, it might be easier to pick up one of our bath bomb kits. Our Natural Bath Bomb Kit comes with enough to make 15 bath bombs. That means that 5 participants would each have 3 DIY bath bombs to take home. Another option is our Bath Bomb Beginner Creator Box. It comes with what you need to make 30 bath bombs, with 3 different molds, 3 fragrances to choose from, plus extras like salt, clay, and flower petals! Everyone can make their own unique creations.

How to prepare for a bath bomb making party

When you throw a bath bomb making party, the prep is pretty minimal but can really make the party a fun and easy experience for everyone.

  • Clear the workspace. Making sure that your workspace is clean and free from clutter is going to help prevent spills and other small disasters. If you’re offering snacks and drinks, stage those on a separate countertop or table.
  • Protect the work surface. Spreading a paper cover over the work surface makes clean-up so easy, and protects your table or countertop from stains.
  • Set up workstations. Setting up each guest with a set of tools and their own spot to work in helps keep things organized and problem free. Set up each spot with a bowl, droppers, gloves, and mixing utensils. It may also be nice to provide each spot with a small spray bottle with witch hazel, but that’s optional. It’s fine if everyone shares, too.
  • Provide instructions. Each guest should get a set of instructions to use, whether that’s provided digitally or on a piece of paper. This means your guests will know exactly what to do next, and won’t be waiting to use a single set of instructions.

Tips for your DIY bath bomb making party

While the party is in full swing, we have a few tips to keep things running smoothly.

  • Be available to help. If your guests run into a problem or are not sure what to do next, they may call on you for help. Read the instructions ahead of time, and help smooth out any bumps in the road.
  • Include social time. Giving your guests time to settle in and chat before you get started is a great idea. You can also include time afterward to enjoy a coffee or snacks, or to take selfies with their finished creations.
  • Make sure all your supplies are in place. Nobody wants to go hunting for something they need. Use a checklist to make sure you and your guests have everything they need, and that the supplies and tools are out and set up on the work surface.

Bath bombs are a great craft to make at a craft party. The supplies are pretty inexpensive, and it’s easy for everyone to make their own.
